National Service Scheme - Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (PG) College, Civil Lines, Kanpur

Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s birth Centenary year, 1969. The primary objective of the scheme is all round development of students through participation in community service. NSS is a voluntary association of young people in educational institutions. with a view to establishing a strong and meaningful campus-community linkage.

The D.A-V College NSS programme is organised by the students themselves, and both students and teachers, through their combined participation in community service, inculcate in them a sense of involvement in the tasks of nation building. The programme accords its members a unique opportunity to hone their skills and develop a deeper understanding of social problems and needs. The NSS programme at D.A-V. College imbibes the spirit of community service.

Motto

The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’. This projects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and respect for humanity by transcending the narrow barriers of caste, creed and religion. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is inextricably dependent on the welfare of society.

Icon

The NSS icon is the wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space. Similarly the NSS programme symbolizes the unrelenting movement of life and the progressive life cycle. Signifying continuity as well as change, the icon implies the continuous striving of NSS for social transformation and upliftment.

NSS Day

NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day marked by community service and awareness proagrammes.

Objectives

To enable the students to develop a constructive attitude towards the community in which they live and work.

To develop an understanding of themselves in relation to their community.

To identify the needs and problems in the community and to seek solution to those problems.

To infuse in themselves a strong sense of social and civic responsibility.

To develop competence required for group living and sharing responsibilities.

To develop leadership qualities and democratic attitude.

To work towards capacity building in order to meet emergencies and disasters

To uphold national integration by spreading the message of universal fraternity.
